If you have heard some of the stories that come along from time to time about metal detectorists and treasure hunters making huge finds and even becoming rich you may fancy giving it a go yourself. When the story broke in the UK about the Staffordshire Hoard discovery, the largest ever find of anglo saxon gold and silver ever found, I have to say that it got my imagination going! The amateur metal detectorist has become a very wealthy man.
I became very serious about taking up this hobby, with visions of finding gold or other rare items. I am realistic in my day dreams tho and decided that it would be a good idea to do a little research before buying a metal detector so as to give myself the best possible chance.
The technology behind metal detectors really has come a long way since I first heard about this hobby. There are quite a few things to think about when making the choice to buy a metal detector. Some metal detectors can work underwater, if you would like to find gold in streams and rivers for instance this would be something you might want in a metal detector.
I personally think that the most important thing I would want from a metal detector is the ability to ignore scrap metals, metals that are going to have no value. If you do your research and buy the right metal detector you will save yourself time and effort, you don't want to waste time digging up junk metal!
